One of the most frequent questions we get when it comes to installed modules on our servers are about the Imagick and the WebP.
With this article we want to clear out what we do and do not support and how this will affect your website.
We do NOT have any of those modules (Imagick and the WebP) installed on our servers. How this affects your website?
Let's start with the Imagick.
The module is being used by several plugins which are common. Therefore lots of our clients believe that if we do not support the module, they can't use the plugins anymore - which is not true.
Instead of the library Imagick we use GD library which does the job just as good as Imagick.
If you see a warning in any of your plugin settings/WP admin dashboard which says "Warning The optional module, imagick, is not installed, or has been disabled." - do not worry, the GD module will do the job for you.
What about the WebP?
WebP is a file format developed by Google in order to provide the best image quality with the highest file compression possible.
Unfortunately, WebP is pretty new format (pretty new according the PC standards) and we haven't added the support for this module yet.
This doesn't mean we will not add it in the future, the module is in our list of updates for our servers. However, we are still testing with the module and we can't provide any ETA for its completion.
Meanwhile what this means for your website?
Currently our servers can serve any .webp images without any issues, so if you have any files with .webp format, there is nothing to worry about.
Keep in mind that when it comes to image conversion to .webp via most of the plugins it will not work (example https://wordpress.org/plugins/webp-converter-for-media/ will return error "Server configuration: "imagewebp" function is not available."), however other plugins like EWWW Image optimiser work fine (https://wordpress.org/plugins/ewww-image-optimizer/)
If we have to summarize the whole article in one sentence - not having any of those modules with us will not hurt your website or prevent it from function normaly.
